Kimono Reborn
While researching my trip to Japan, Kimono Reborn popped up on my Instagram. I was immediately drawn to their beautiful products and messaging. Their mission is to bring new life to discarded Kimonos, using Japanese craftsmanship to turn them into a variety of products.
In their flagship store, you’ll find a wide range of options, including t-shirts, totes, hats, travel cases and various other bag styles. This is what I initially encountered online and couldn’t wait to visit in person. As I am a complete sucker for totes, I knew I would seek out this item. The options were overwhelming, with an expansive collection of absolutely gorgeous styles. I then discovered that they had “Japan” crewnecks, another touristy souvenir I love to get when I travel. These were beautiful as well, with the lettering of “Japan” created with scraps of kimonos.
From there, I decided to check out their “Tokyo Kimono Shoes” store, which, as the name suggests, hosts handcrafted leather shoes made from rescued Kimonos. I immediately fell in love with the stunning designs. Drawn to the uniqueness of this wearable souvenir, I decided I would purchase a pair. Since each pair is unique, you don’t just pick one off the wall and ask for that one in your size. I first picked out some that I liked the colour scheme of, and then the staff member brought out a variety of options in my size that were similar in theme. I have to point out that the customer service here was lovely, as they walked me through my options, gave me advice and information about caring for the shoes, and answered questions about the process for creating the shoes. I decided on a pair with a navy and white base with a kimono inset of a multicoloured floral pattern; I am absolutely in love with them.
As I write this, I recognize that at first glance, this is just about a shopping experience. But I want to bring into focus the nature and intention of these shops. This group is trying to extend the life of a tradition in a unique and modern way. The creation of their collection rescues kimonos, extending their lifespans and making them part of a modern, sustainable line of products.
I am personally thrilled to have brought home a number of their items. They are beautiful, truly unique souvenirs that I get to use in my everyday life, reminders of an incredible trip.
